Planning Your First Family Reunion

Learning about your families history can be both entertaining and intriguing especially when researching with an open mind. Many authors and playwrights base the character development of best selling stories on family members. Often one's best friend proves to be an aunt, cousin or relative twice removed, discovered only after connecting the branches of the proverbial family tree.

What better way to introduce new links to the branch, along with new insights than at the next upcoming family reunion. What? No family reunion has been planned? Why not start planning right now. All that is needed is the right tools and a little motivation.

Plan a meaningful, memorable, inspiring and fun event. How can you accomplish this with minimal difficulty? Family reunion planning web apps are designed to guide you through the maze of event planning with ease.

Yes, there are only a few family reunion apps on the market, but it's amazing what such an app can accomplish. With the right reunion planning app you'll get your event planned in no time. Imagine having it all planned in a matter of days, organized in a few weeks, funded in a month or two and managed from the welcoming meet and greet right down to the fond farewell.

Fimark's family reunion planning book and spreadsheet will help you plan the entire occasion in no time at all.

How To Start Planning A Family Reunion

One of the most challenging feats of planning a family reunion is getting it all organized. It's one thing to say what you want to do. It's quite another to make that reality. But following this these simple steps can make all the difference.

1. Form a family reunion committee.
2. Include family members who are great motivators, leaders and hard workers.
3. Next brain storm your family reunion theme, slogan and associated activities.
4. Next delegate members of the committee to man departments typical of a big event. This may include your welcome department, food and drink department, entertainment department, genealogy research, and presentation, etc...
5. Meet periodically to update the group on the progress being made.

How do you rally the family and get everyone excited and involved?

How do you make cost saving decisions?

How do you raise funds for the event?

What are some popular reunion games and activities everyone is sure to enjoy?

How do you plan a dignified reception dinner program that honors the elders and empowers the family?

For more help getting organized use the ever popular family reunion planner and keepsake guidebook at that will help you get your most memorable reunion event up and running in no time.

Becoming A Family History Digger Part 1

Say what? Our mind, body, and spirit have ways of communicating with us that is not explained in main stream media or secular education books. Have you ever had an urge to eat something that does not normally appear on your weekly menu of preferred food items? Your body is likely telling you that you need to supplement your diet with a nutrient supplement vital to your continued good health.

Have you ever had a desire to travel to a certain city, state, country or island? The past may be calling out to you in ways you do not understand. After doing so many travelers found out they have genetic connections to the aboriginal inhabitants of the land.

Have you ever opened a box found in the attic, basement or garage and just started pulling everything out until you found a precious family heirloom you forgot you had that suddenly unlocked memory long forgotten? Sometimes those memories have a way of putting you back on track and solidifying goals once defined and principles followed by your better self.

Do you like to find hidden gems of truth and put that knowledge to work to better yourself, and empower your family? Who doesn't? The past may be calling out to you in ways you do not understand. Perhaps to become the family historian. Are you a digger? Now is a time of great ancestral enlightenment. Many genealogists realize that secular history books are not telling their story accurately. Is it time to find out the truth about who you really are? The four part series "Becoming Family Reunion Historian" will delve into the fascinating pastime of discovering and recording family history while revealing the challenges, solutions, treasures, and joys of being a family history digger. Get your family genealogy research and presentation forms ready for the biggest find of your life.

Outdoor Family Reunion Event Ideas

There is nothing like the great outdoors. State parks, beaches, road trips to homesteads and tours. Good music, a breezy day and fun in the sun can set a restful and refreshing mood for a great reunion event.

Having an outdoor family reunion is probably the most economical approach for those entertaining large gatherings with many siblings. Why? Outdoor venues are 50-60% less expensive when compared to indoor venues such as a reception hall. Outdoor events are usually one-day events.

Outdoor gatherings lend themselves to more creative activities. The sky's the limit when you consider all that you can do. Here are a few great ideas

1. TV Game Show Style Outdoor Games
2. Quilting Under The Wisdom Tree
3. 'Back In The Day' Family Interviews
4. Family History Storytelling
5. Arts and Craft presentations
6. Genealogy Presentations
7. 'My Family's Got Talent' Show
8. Fantastic Bubble Show
9. Family Recipe BBQ Cook Off
10. Poetry Club

More more details consult the Book Fimark's Family Reunion Planner.

Fimark's Family Reunion Planner

Managing the kids is a whole lot easier.  Just direct them to the nearest baseball diamond, Playset or basketball hoop. Other great activities for kids include horseback riding and more. Best of all there's no indoor furniture or decor to break, mend and refurbish during and after the event.

The ideal season for an outdoor event is mid to late Spring when the weather is milder. Early Autumn can be ideal. But Summer is the time most often chosen for a family reunion. Why? The kids are off from school. It's the ideal vacation time and there are long weekends to take advantage of.

Looking for inspiring themes, activities, and ideas to make your reunion something memorable? Get Fimark's Family Reunion Planner. It's everything you need to plan, organize and manage a fantastic reunion.

Motivating Follow-Up Tips

Some planners schedule follow-up meetings over lunch or dinner or before a special event or family gathering.

Many planners keep a special calendar of family events such as anniversaries, graduations, parties, school plays, concerts and shows that family members are involved in so they will have something of mutual interest to spark the follow-up conversation. After asking how everyone in the household is doing focus the conversation on how well the family reunion event is coming. Praise specific committee members who are making good progress with tasks.

Close the follow-up by expressing appreciation for their important contribution to the event. Let them know that thanks to them things will go smoothly and that you can relax knowing they have the task at hand.

If time is a factor simply make a few phone calls. If one on one conversation with each committee member just isn't practical, send text messages or email messages that capture the sentiment of the suggestions given above.

Email Follow-Up

If using email to follow-up, attach the committee task worksheet and ask them to reply with an update on how the task is coming along. You will find the subcommittee departmental task worksheets in Fimark's award winning Family Reunion Planner Workbook, Guide, and Keepsake, available at

If there is no reply within a reasonable amount of time follow-up with a phone call to confirm the email was received. Ask about the progress they are making with assigned tasks and tactfully offer some helpful suggestions that may help the assignee to complete the task.

Timing Is Everything

Lunchtime is a great time to start sending those follow-up emails out. You're likely to get several immediate responses shortly after lunch hour. Commend those who respond and boast about those who completed their tasks in a timely manner. Take the time to find out how, and pass it on to the rest of the team. Show confidence that all tasks will be completed soon and keep everyone inspired and excited about the upcoming event.

Happy family reunion planning!

Free Fundraising Ideas

Fundraisers are the ideal way to get that family reunion funded and enjoy the moment without worrying about the cost. But raising funds can be a challenge and costly without the right tools and fundraising ideas. Let's talk about how to raise funds without having to spend a dime.

Free Online Fund Raising Ideas

One of the most time efficient and cost effective ways to raise funds is to promote a fundraiser to all family members via your google+ or facebook page. Just send a family-wide message to contribute $5 to the reunion treasury. Need some incentives. To those who contribute, send a link to a list of freebies and prizes like free books, websites, and product samples.

Fundraising Web Apps

Another way to raise funds without spending upfront money is using a standalone fundraising application. has been online for over 12 years and offers a free fully functional fundraising web app that messages all family members and invites them to fund your event with a credit or debit card. Take a tour at

Fundraising T-shirts

Another great way to raise funds is selling family reunion t-shirts.  When priced right they encourage contributing to the cause. It's amazing how easy it is to design and promote t-shirt sales online.  A great place to go to do this is at Zazzle. Check out these pre-designed family reunion shirts ideal for fundraisers.
Just select the design. Add family reunion event info and send it to your family members via text or email.

Food Fundraisers

Finally, there is that food thing that is always a great fundraising success. Do a potluck bake sale that features wholesome home-made goodness. Contact all the best cooks in the family, friends, coworkers and neighbors. And while you're at it have a bake sale on one side of the yard and a yard sale on the other.

Heirloom Fundraisers

Have a few family heirlooms. Why not offer them for lease so they can circulate to the highest bidders over a set period of time. Don't have a family heirloom or keepsake. Make one using Fimark's Family Reunion Planner Keepsake and Guidebook. It comes complete with a signature page, journal, family recipe compiler, family tree and other genealogy presentation worksheets. Just complete the book and put it up for circulation during the fundraiser. The highest bidder gets to keep and use the book for the year allowing other family members to add to its keepsake content each year.

Party Planning Guide

12 Best Life Ever Party and Event Planner: Keepsake and event planning guide Paperback – October 9, 2016

Sunday, January 15, 2017

Family Reunion Timeline Checklist

1. Incoming 2017
2. Making Plans Making Memories
3. Reunion Preparation Reminders
4. Raising Funds

Here is a shout out to family reunion planners in Canada, Germany, Paris, France, New Mexico, and the Bahamas.

1. Incoming 2017
Can you believe that 2016 has come and gone? And here we are quickly moving thru January 2017. Before you know it we'll be sipping a frosty glass of lemonade to the beat of "Family Reunion" on a warm sunny afternoon while the young'ns laugh and play. Yes, the cup of 2017 will be half full and the rest about to be swallowed.

That said don't drink down that cup of life too quickly. Savor every moment. Enjoy the family and remember the good times. All we really have are our memories, the present time, and those we can only hope to make tomorrow. What are your New Years resolutions? How close are you to meeting your goal? Here's an important one:

Spend more time with family even if it means writing letters, making phone calls or video conferencing. Make it happen.

While you're at it keep everyone apprisedsed of the progress planning the next family reunion. Now is the time to check where you are on the "Family Reunion Timeline Checklist" found on your copy of Fimark's Family Reunion Planner Guidbook and Keepsake. Wrap up collecting photos, stories, genealogy research and start making definite plans to put together your photo and genealogy presentations. Plan to have it all completed by the end of February or early March.

If you're booking a reception hall follow up on this now. Order supplies early or when materials are least expensive. By now everyone should know how much family reunion dues are and most of the funds should be collected by months end. Commence ordering T-shirts now if you have not done so. You'll need time to examine a sample, approve it and have them start printing. When the shirts arrive you'll need to check each one and return a few for replacements. Plan to have your t-shirts on hand by April. Touch base with all committee members to make sure they are making progress on assigned task.

4. Raising Funds
By now you should have a good idea of how much funding is needed to pull off the reunion event. First look for ways to cut down on expenses without compromising quality. Is there a need to have more funds on hand? Consider having an auction to raise money. Start planning now. A great time for an indoor Auction is during the cold season. Outdoor auctions are good for the warmer dryer season. What will you sell?

If you have crafty family members ask them to donate items. Check out some flea markets for collector's items you know certain family members will have to have. Put up some items you own that some of your family members have shown an interest in. Create gift baskets. Order bulk greeting cards and sell them in packs. Have someone bake a few pies. Others can sell family coupons for home cooked Sunday meals. Make it clear how much you're looking to get with the sale of each item. Your aim is to meet or beat that goal.

TIP 1: Have a family member erect a goal scoreboard and write out the goal and how close you are getting to the goal each time an item is sold. This will focus attendees interest on meeting the goal and encourage participation.

TIP 2: Have you inspected and appraised the family heirlooms? Perhaps a few family members are willing to pay a few bucks for the honor of temporary ownership. Most of all enjoy the moment of planning. Before you know it, it will all have passed and you will have made many sweet memories to savor.

Find a checklist app, t-shirt and fundraising app, worksheets, memory booklet maker in Fimark's Family Reunion Social Planning web app. Get your copy of this award winning Family Reunion Planner at
